2005 "War Of The Worlds" Has Different Tripod Designs
I really liked Spielberg's 2005 "War Of The Worlds". Sure, it wasn't as good as the book, but as far as the movie's faults go, that's pretty much it. The Characters are good, the aliens (which are not Martians in Spielberg's version) and Tripods were awesome, the John Williams music was great, and everything else was cool and apocalyptic. The 1953 version tells the story as adapted from a cool 50s Si-fi point of view, and now in the 2005 reboot, the story is told as a modern thriller plot. So when I found out about a fan theory regarding the film, naturally I flipped (figuratively, not literally).
The iconic tripods in Spielberg's adaption look very similar to each other. They also share many characteristics, such as force-shields, three legs (duh) and more. But after deep analysis, it seems that there may be at least three different Tripod types in the movie. I've given each type its own name, to make classifying them easier. Before we begin, be sure to comment on this post to vote and also let me know what you think of the content, and share. Enjoy!
SPOILERS AHEAD
Type #1: Fighter
This tripod variant first appears in New Jersey, and is seen throughout the film more than any other tripod type. It has a large headlight in the middle of its head, with two smaller lights on either side of its main light. It possess twin heat-rays, and appears to have tentacles, though it is not shown using them as far as I know.
Fighter Images:
As already mentioned, these tripods are the most commonly seen in the film. The tripod in New Jersey that comes out of the ground and wreaks havoc is a Fighter. In the airplane scene, when Ray sees the recording of tripods attacking a city, those are fighters. These tripods are also in the ferry scene, and it is a Fighter that gets blown up a the end.
Type #2: Exterminator
This tripod is seen at the ferry scene and at the hill scene. In the ferry scene, three Fighter tripods attack and force Ray and his family onto the ferry. As they almost get away, a tripod comes out of the water, but it looks different from the Fighters. It has a much larger head, with four small lights beside the main light, two on each side, instead of just three headlights in all. It also has heat- rays.
Ferry Exterminator
We also see three Exterminators on the hill, at the battle at the hill scene.
Don't these tripods look like their hoods and sizes are different?
These tripods seem the biggest and bulkiest of the variants.
Type #3: Harvester
These tripods not only grab humans, but store them in cages under their hoods. They extract them periodically, and kill them by sucking out the humans' blood, using them as fertilizer for the red weeds.
They, like all the tripods, have many small tentacles, but Harvesters in addition have two extra long tentacles for picking up humans.
These tripods look very similar to Fighters, sharing the three headlights, but these are bigger, and their legs are thinner and more spindly.
Harvester tripod:
We know for certain not all the tripods have cages, because the Fighter at the attack on New Jersey didn't have any:
The heads of these tripods also seem bigger than the Fighters.
The Harvesters also appear to be the only tripods with no heat-rays. If they have them, they are not shown using them in the film itself. These tripods are in the film basically from when the Ray and Rachel first enter the basement, and are the only tripods we see from that point on, until the end, when the army blows up the Fighter.
Thank you for reading! I'm not the inventor of this theory; others have written about it so be sure to check them out.
